HOPE TO HEAL

Hope for those suffering from Lyme Disease

Dance On!

I saw my doc two weeks ago and although it was a day when I was having an episode of Malaria/Babesia (we’ve decide to call it that since no test so far has been conclusive of either, but I never had these symptoms until I came home from India in 2005), he was greatly encouraged. In fact he said something that nearly blew my socks right off …..he told me that I was his healthiest patient!!!! Wow. That’s incredible news. He loves it when I come in. I’m just not your typical patient. I’ve thought through everything clearly and I’ve taken notes to bring with me. I go over my blood work with a fine tooth comb…at least as much as I can understand. I ask questions and have logical discussions. I’m always thinking outside the box. I’m telling you, I’m the kind of person who asks, “what do I have to do to be healed”, and I do it!

I’m going to digress here for something that has been near to my heart on this journey to healing. It’s the story of the crippled man from Bethesda as chronicled in the Bible.

Jesus asked him “What is it you want me to do for you?” Seems pretty obvious, huh? The man said, “Heal me.” What Jesus wanted to know was if the man really wanted to be healed. Or did he enjoy the sympathy and attention that being crippled got him. I had to face this exact question one day back in 2006. The Lord really confronted me with the question, “What is it you want me to do for you?” That’s when I made the decision to do whatever it takes. To live well and not cheat. To practice what I preached. To listen to His leading. To ask for His leading. And that’s what you have to do. I can tell you everything I’ve done to get where I am, but you have to decide what it is God has for you. We are not all the same, so my supplement regime wouldn’t necessarily be yours. My infections and symptoms are surely different than yours, so you have to gear your regime to fit you. I can tell you that diet is vital. And that Dr Zhang’s herbs work! Listen to the Lord and listen to your body. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and take a step of faith on this road of healing.

Now back to my other thoughts.

We don’t know if one of my infections is Malaria or Babesia. Either way they are treated the same. My natural choice has been Dr Zhang’s Artemisea. My doc offers me choices. Then I always steal his thunder by saying the right thing. Like I told him I didn’t think it was wise to take Malarone or any other Rx for the Malaria/Babesia, due to the fact that my liver enzymes are still elevated. That’s where he was going with it, but he wanted to know what I wanted. Then he asked if I was ready for something really different. I said sure.

He went over all my supp’s and herbs and said that I couldn’t be doing a better job at killing the infections and supporting my body. He told me that I couldn’t be living a better lifestyle with diet and environmental issues. We went through my history again from age 20.

He’s been trying a new therapy for a while and thought we ought to go a new direction in our approach. My doc believes that anyone of us can carry Lyme and it’s co-infections or even cancer for that matter, around in our bodies for a very, very long time with no symptoms. Then BAM! Something happens like the birth of a child. A job loss. A death. An accident or a surgery. Something stressful or traumatic. Something that may leave a scar, both literal and figuratively. And it, the infections becomes active. For myself, I’ve gone in and out of the symptoms for years. The most recent in 2005 being the most severe ever.

My doc is also a licensed acupuncturist. And I’ve had him give me a few treatments for back pain and foot pain. It works like magic every time. I understand the principles behind acupuncture. And I understand in a limited way that our bodies are full of energy. Thus we have nerves and energy flowing through us constantly. And they can get blocked by scar tissue. A nerve that is cut or cut close to can take yrs and yrs to recover. AND suppose it’s scarring that is keeping me from reaching that next level of healing.

That new therapy he’s been working with is, Scar Therapy. See I have a ton of scars. The first, on my chin when I cut it open on barbed wire when I was two. The next came in 1984 & 1988 from episiotomies when having my two children. Then I had 8 surgeries in 6 yrs on my arms and hands from an auto accident in 1993. I think that’s it. (One doc told me never to stop taking 1,000 mg of Vit C daily due to all the x-rays I’ve had in my lifetime. X-rays have been proven to be a link to cancer.) The strange thing my doc has seen is that sometimes a scarring incident can be all it takes to send you into a spiral. It did with me. After my second child and consequently my second episiotomy I crashed. After 8 surgeries on my arms and hands I crashed.

I’m not saying I understand it all. I’m just willing to try something new. I’ve already made tremendous progress so why not see if I can improve even more.

I started taking a homeopathic treatment to dissolve scar tissue, which still ridals me. Now I’ll chart everything and see if anything changes. The idea is to open pathways of healing so I can rise further above this mess. (I’m back after starting this a few weeks ago.) I’ve been taking the Scar Therapy for two weeks. It’s amazing, I squirt 8 sprays in my mouth 3 times a day. The scar on my chin from when I was 2 yrs old is itching for the first time ever. The scars on my hands are itching like crazy. This stuff is working. After the first week I experienced a lot of pain in my hands which are covered in scars from all the surgeries and investigative surgeries. I have no less than 6 little X’s on the top of my hands and wrists from the telescopic surgery to find the problem. Then I have a incision that is about 8-10″ long on each arm where my ulna’s were shortened. Each opened multiple times.

So for now, I know that something is breaking loose from the inside. I’ll let you know how it goes.

We also talked about the the moon and it’s cycles. A lot of Lyme patients believe they see a worsening of symptoms when there is a full moon. I’m not sure. But interestingly enough I did have two very bad Malaria/Babesia episodes at the first quarter of the moon just in the last few months. So, it’s just another thing to chart and keep track of. This month I saw an entire week of on again and off again issues during the week from the 1st quarter to the full moon. AND this full moon was one of the closest we’ve had in years. Do you remember it? It was so close to the earth, it looked like you could touch it. After the night of the full moon, nothing. I’ve been fine.

I’m sharing this so that you can be aware of new approaches to healing. Step out of the box! And allow Jesus to ask you, “What is it you want me to do for you?” Can you say, “I REALLY WANT TO BE HEALED!” That means taking full responsibility and making no more excuses. Dancing to your hearts content!

My Winter Remedies

I woke up this morning with that awful feeling that I’m getting sick. I forgot to take my handful of Vit C before I went to bed last night. That’s my number one weapon of attack. I usually take 5-10 grams, that’s 5,000-10,000 mg right before bed. Since it’s flu season and a lot of people are walking around with it, I also have been taking 20-35 drops of Echinasea tincture. I make my own tincture and I like it with Goldenseal.

dscn1127

I also have been making Elderberry Syrup for the past couple months whenever I feel it. I drizzle Elderberry Syrup in my yogurt or I’ll take some in a little bit of water several times a day and that helps tremendously. I was blessed to find an Elderberry tree on our property this summer and froze 4 gallons of berries. It does have a short shelf life in the frig, so I only make small batches at a time.

I also keep homemade chicken soup in the freezer all winter so that I can pull it out when needed. It’s not called Jewish Penicillin for nothin. I always make a pot of good bone broth first by cooking a chicken in a stock pot for no less than a day and then on the second day adding veggies. If you have feet and heads throw them in! The more gelatin the better!

dscn1077

Also this morning since I’m really feeling it, I drank some juice from my fermented pickles and downed some whey that was dripping from some kefir cheese that I was making. I drank the pickle juice because my sauerkraut doesn’t have a lot of juice. Remember a few years ago, the word was going around that the FDA was suggesting sauerkraut for the bird flu. Well, it’s fermented juice that you’re after. It’s loaded with Vit C, it inhibits the proliferation of bacteria, and acts as a antibiotic.

I also use a hand sanitizer in the winter when I’m out in public. This is the only time I recommend it.

Keepeth Thy Hands Clean!

Pay attention to your body and you’ll know when to increase your pro-active attack plan. Don’t wait for it to get a foot hold, because once it does then your battle is much harder to fight. And remember that for some of us we have a compromised immune system and you should work very hard at avoiding it like the plague.

And stay away from sugar! It weakens the immune system. In my opinion I think that’s why we have so much sickness during the winter months. Not only is our supply of Vit D  greatly reduced but we are consuming tons of sugar during the holiday months when the flu is at it’s peak! And don’t forget your Cod Liver Oil which is packed with Vit A and Vit D, it’s like sunshine in a bottle. Oh go ahead….just pinch your nose! Really the CLO today does not taste bad and is easy to swallow!

For some of you this may be your first Christmas holiday without sweets. Press on. Check out my post on Christmas Cheer, where I give a couple great recipe ideas that won’t cause you to regret your actions. I also added a few more on my other blog.

Best of health to you this winter!

Christmas Cheer

dscn0972

Many will find this time of year extremely challenging. With diets and temptations abounding. I encourage you to not fall off the wagon during the Christmas, Hanukkah and New Years celebrations. Instead plan a course now to prevent failure. Here are a few tips.

Stay away from sweets. I know easier said than done. But, I’ve done it and I know that if I can you can too.

Stay away from grains. Yes, that means breads, cookies and pies!

But if you’re going to indulge remember a few things…….

Make it a different kind of year. If you are going to use grains then soak your grains and flours in kefir or whey to break down the phytic acid which prevents digestion and inhibits the absorption of nutrients and blocks enzymes. Use sourdoughs as much as possible. Stay way from refined sugars. Use raw honey for as much as you can. Adding a little maple syrup or even Rapadura or Turbinado. But not too much, they still affect ones blood sugar. I find that raw honey has the least effects on my blood sugar and never puts me back into the craving sugar mode. And I use it in equal amounts when baking.

Try using a variety of flours. For instance coconut, almond and rice. You can replace them for equal measurements. You can find these from Bob’s Red Mill at your local health food store. I used coconut and almond to make a pie crust and it was delicious.

Indulge yourself instead in Eggnog. Using raw milk, raw cream, raw free range eggs and some raw honey or maple syrup with a dash of organic nutmeg, dash of salt. There’s nothing like it. In fact you can make this one of your favorite morning shakes. Try adding frozen blueberries for extra antioxidants. Many suggest only using the raw egg yolks, since too many raw egg whites can cause a biotin deficiency. A biotin deficiency can increase problems with diabetes, poor pituitary and low thyroid. Even toss in some good oils like coconut or flax and you have a powerhouse drink!

Macaroons are a wonderful treat and are a good way to use up those egg whites. You can freeze your egg whites in a container and keep adding to them. Make sure you write the number on the container. The recipe from Sally Fallon’s Nourishing Traditions is great.

Sally Fallon’s Macaroons

Beat 4 raw egg whites with a pinch of salt until you have stiff peaks.

Add 2 Tbsp of Arrowroot. And slowly add 1/2 C Maple Syrup and 1 Tbsp Vanilla. Fold in 2 Cups of dried unsweetened coconut.

Drop by spoonfuls onto parchment paper.

Heat oven to 300 and bake for 1/2 hr. Reduce oven to 200 and bake an additional 1 hr. Allow to cool before removing from parchment paper. Store in airtight container. Makes 2 dozen.

I’m only planning one dessert for Christmas. I’ll be making my favorite Blackberry Cobbler. I froze several bags of berries this summer and it will be a wonderful treat. Plop on some raw cream and yummy! No need to sweeten the cream since it’s already sweet heavy cream!

And then if you are a chocolate lover, you must try my healthy chocolates. Chocolate is full of antioxidants and it’s a fermented food. However, most chocolate is also full of sugar! And I suppose that is why most folks with Lyme say they can’t eat chocolate. My solution is to make my own which are to die for. You can switch out the almond butter with peanut butter, or leave it out entirely. Although the opinion around here is that they are better with a nut butter. Enjoy.

Guiltless Chocolates(all measurements are approximate, tweak them as you like)

1/2 Cup raw butter softened

1 Tbsp virgin coconut oil

1 Tbsp almond butter

2 heaping Tbsp “Really Raw” honey (or whatever honey you like)

2 heaping Tbsp organic cocoa (or raw chocolate)

Mix all these ingredients together and drop by the spoonful on a plate lined with waxed paper. Place the plate in the freezer till hardened. Eat quickly because they melt in your hands. The idea here is to eat raw, so use as many raw ingredients as possible. ENJOY! Variations: unsweetened shredded coconut, nuts (crispy), whatever tickles your taste buds!

Remember that the holidays are not an excuse to fall off the wagon. They are a time to celebrate our Saviours birth and to enjoy family and loved ones. Learn new habits for this New Year and you will begin to see your healing quickly appear!

I also encourage you to invest in Sally Fallon’s book, Nourishing Traditions. It will be an endless resource to your cooking library. Make this New Year a time to recreate the way you see and eat food. Make food your medicine and have a purpose for each bite.

Really Good News!

If you’ve been following this blog, you know I was probably reinfected at least with Babesia in June.  You can read about my really good news on my Peaceful Acres blog.

Whatever It Takes

I recently heard a personal trainer say that there are three types of people that he works with. As I heard him list these I was struck that this is also true with healing. So what kind of person are you?

1. I’ll Try

2. I’ll Do My Best

3. I’ll Do Whatever It Takes

My entire life, I’ve been a #3 kind of a person. I’ll Do Whatever It Takes!!!!!!! On this journey with Lyme Disease you must decide for yourself. Decide how hard you will work. Decide whether you’ll stick to a strick diet. Decide whether you have the stuff that heroes are made of.

It won’t be easy. Nothing worth fighting for is. But you have to decide for yourself what plan of action to take. You have to embrace your plan. I have been around the block too many times to know that even if someone says they have a “cure” you will not embrace it. You will keep trying a million other things, especially if the “cure” has any level of difficulty to it.

I’m reading for the umpteeth time, Beyond Our Selves, by Catherine Marshall. This book has been my companion on this journey along with my Bible. Catherine suffered from TB. There was no cure in her day. She discovered a secret. It’s not really a secret, but she discovered how to follow the secret. The secret is in Mark 9:25. Jesus says, “I tell you, you have whatever you ask for, if you only believe first, you will have it.” (paraphrase mine)

FACT, FAITH, FEELINGS. It’s hard to believe when you don’t feel it. And in my opinion it’s especially hard with LD. Since the infection is so seriously in our brains. When the brain is severely inflamed it’s so hard to hold on to the truth. This is where my faith has come in. When I can’t believe, I lay it all before the Lord and allow Him to hold me. To lead me through the valley of the shadow of death. And all through that valley, I’m thanking Him for something I don’t yet have completely…..my healing! Everyday, I thank God for my healing. Because I believe that it will one day appear.

In the mean time, I’ll continue to do WHATEVER IT TAKES.

Won’t you join me? Come on lets do it together….WHATEVER IT TAKES!

Udate On My Health

I wanted to give you an update on my recent struggle with Hemolytic Anemia caused by Babesia. For those of you who haven’t read my blog, I had some invader killing my RBC at a rapid rate. My doc was pretty certain it was a reinfection of Babesia, since I’d had another deer tick in June 2008 and it was a few months after that, that I began to feel tired and worn out again. I thought it was because I’d worked so hard this summer.

Here are two photos to compare how I looked. For me this is amazing. I Knew in Photo #1 that I was feeling tired and drawn out, but I didn’t know how badly or why. Photo #2 was taken just last week after aggressively attacking the Hemolytic Anemia with food and supp’s. I am taking Milk Thistle-1200 mg, mega doses of Vit C for inflammation, increased Thyroid/Liver from Dr Ron’s, and adding back in Artemisiae from Hepapro, lots of Cod Liver Oil and a slew of other supp’s including Dr Zhang’s protocol.

I’ve been on the Artemisiae again for 1 month now and feel like night and day. Even though I haven’t had one positive test for Babesia other than a clinical diagnosis, it’s clear to me that when I take Artemisiae and feel this great then there’s no denying I am infected with it. (It’s either that or Malaria from my time in India?) I had one very, very bad attack while on vacation in NC a couple weeks ago. It was a doozy! One of the worst I’ve ever had. My good days out weigh my bad again. I’ve gone from the every other day syndrome to maybe one bad day every couple weeks. I’m working hard again and looking forward to our new addition to Peaceful Acres; a Jersey cow!!! I picked up our 3 laying hens on Friday and have been tending to them this weekend. I worked for a couple hours yesterday fixing the fence and tending my winter garden. I’m praying that this will last through the winter and on. I’ve yet to have one good winter for the past…..well, I don’t know how many years. A very long time.

November 2008

I suppose I did look kinda jaundice. Ok a lot jaundice and soooo tired. I’ll be having another set of labs done this week and I’m sure that I’ve gotten my liver enzymes and bilirubin down. And that my RBC count is up to normal. It’s just my hunch.

Transfer Factor

A few days ago, I shared with you the lectures by Jerry Brunetti. If you remember, he talked about something called, Immune Milk. Here are a couple very good articles that go into great depth to explain how immune milk works. I recently started taking LymPlus again, until I can get my own immune milk. My doc met the folks from Researched Nutritionals last year and he was very impressed with their products and began prescribing them for his patients. This product is specific to a wide range or lyme antigens and all the co-infections.

The herxing can be quite significant and as explained here, it boosts your T-cells for battle. I took this product for 1 month last year. It wasn’t understood then how long one needed to take the product, but after reading this information about using a universal oral vaccine, I think that if one were to use LymPlus they’d need to take it for at least 1 year as described below in “Universal Oral Vaccine Part 5”.

“Through periodic laboratory measures of the activity of natural killer cells, their physician associates have been able to correlate increased activity with decrease in the disease and its symptoms. (Please note: this is not a natural killer cell count, but rather a measure of activity of the killer cells already present in the patient.) The tests and stimulating supplement are not inexpensive, and results may take a year or so to gradually demonstrate effectiveness in some immune-weakened cases – but, considering the alternatives, this is indeed a “miraculous” result from colostrum.”

Indeed, a miraculous result of colostrum! Not just any colostrum as you might have read, but specific immune colostrum.

Good News

My doc called last evening with my recent lab results. I’ve managed to raise my hemoglobin another 2 pts! I’ve come from 26.9 to 32.6 with 34 being the low end of normal!!! My liver enzymes are still high, but that’s because it will take a while for me to detox my liver from the overload that’s been barraged on it. The Artemisiae is already helping to kill the Babesia and I’m experiencing the every other day syndrome again.

After this latest assault on my body, I’m trying to understand more about the way the infections attack us, and exactly how our body and it’s systems react. I know that for me, the destruction of my RBC was the serious reason for my exhaustion. I’m sure that that constant attack caused my adrenals to take a hit. But it didn’t stem from the adrenals. So many times, I’ve heard that it’s the adrenals and we forget to focus on the infection. As my doc keeps reminding me, we will attack and support my body. He doesn’t want me to live in a constant state of detoxing. It’s his concern that we attack the infections and then clean up after them and aid the body with food and supp’s.

The every other day syndrome I spoke about is feeling exhausted every other day. My family and I saw this pattern years ago, before a diagnosis but we didn’t know what to attribute it to. Now that I’m in another healing phase, I know that it’s to be expected. So, I try to plan for every other day. I can’t expect too much from myself or I disappoint. I hate living this way again, after having so many months of every day being an excellent day, BUT, I have to accept it. I realize that it’s not my adrenals that can’t keep up with me, it’s the total effect of the infections on my body. I’ll continue to support my adrenals, but I won’t stop living on my “good” days. Soon, I’ll start to see more good days and less bad days. Then again, the good with out do the bad until I have 1 bad day a month and then none! It just takes a lot of work and focusing on killing the infections and supporting the body to heal in the process.

Our plan is working and I feel over joyed. My doc asked me exactly what I was doing and he was a little grossed out that I was juicing raw chicken livers! (always make sure you know the source of your food!) It’s all working together. Lots of seafood; salmon, sardines, scallops and Cod Liver Oil. Dried Turkish apricots, pineapple chutney, beet kvass and so many other wonderful healing foods that raise hemoglobin. Juicing, and doing coffee enemas, FAR sauna and hot epsom salts baths. I’ve added raw colostrum back into my diet for the added immune boosters and natural transfer factors from the cow. And I’ve started taking Transfer Factor from Researched Nutritionals again.

Placebo?

I think I’d make a great test trial person. Especially if they gave me the placebo. I’m always a little leary, because I think for any of us, if we think that we’re being helped by something then is it mind over matter???

I don’t know. But I’ve been taking the Artemisiae again from Dr Zhang’s for 4 days and today I had the energy that I had in May. My doc thinks I’ve been reinfected with Babesia and it’s causing Hemolytic Anemia.

I finally cut the grass (nope never got to it the other day-ran out of energy)…I’m hoping this is the last time! 5 acres is getting burdensome after 22 yrs…we need some animals! I dug up my sweet potatoes since we’ve had a couple good heavy frosts. I sprayed the crush and run that my husband put down, and sprayed the car clean. I took a second shower and now I’m roasting sweet red peppers to put up for the winter. My day hasn’t been this full since early summer. And I still have energy to do whatever else I can think of, maybe fix dinner! I need to go to my garden and cut lettuce and cover my plants for the frosty night and Tim our Amish chicken farmer is stopping by with our order of chickens.

So is it the Artemisiae or is it my mind? I don’t really care. I’m glad that I’m feeling a bit better. The blood work will tell us a lot. I do think it’s the Artemisiae though. Because for those of us suffering from Babesia, it doesnt’ matter what you do, you can’t make yourself feel better. You either are or you’re not.

One thing I learned from Jerry Brunneti, if you watched those wonderful videos, is that Artemisiae is a scavenger and eats up the “free iron” which is necessary for the neoplastic cells & microbes to grow wild. It also releases oxygen and destroys the neoplastic cells and microbes, like H2O2.

I think that’s wonderful news. It’s not recommended to take Artemisiae for too long without a break. It can be hard on the liver at the high doses prescribed for Babesia and Malaria. Dr Zhang suggests 60-90 days. The alternative to Artemisiae is taking strong anti-malaria drugs which do even more damage to the liver and cost a small fortune! This is another good reason to make sure you are detoxing.

Arachidonic Acid

Arachidonic Acid is a new term for me. And after you hear Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride say it with her Russian accent…the R just wants to roll off my tongue all day. I first heard of AA when listening to Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride lecturing on autism. Arachidonic Acid is a vitally important essential fatty acid.

The only way to get arachiconic acid (AA) is to eat animal fat. And since AA makes up 12% dry weight of the brain, you can see why it’s vital for Lyme patients to get plenty of it. “Arachidonic acid is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that is present in the phospholipids of membranes of the body’s cells, and is abundant in the brain.” (1)

Since AA is an EFA required by humans, we must make sure our diets have plenty of good organic fats in them. If we don’t eat these fats then our bodies will draw the AA from our brains for use. Most of us can’t afford for that to happen.

It’s recommended by Dr Natasha that one eat plenty of chicken fat, duck fat, pork fat and beef fat in their daily diets. She emphasizes the importance of eating the dark meat and suggests with great enthusiasm eating duck 1x week. It’s also recommended that you collect your fats and keep them in the frig for future use when cooking. Make sure that when you have your daily stock that it includes the fat.

As always, it’s important to know the source of your food. The animals that are grassfed will have a better ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3’s are important for your brain also, but AA comes strictly from Omega 6 and can only be obtained through eating animal fats.

“This graph shows that grain-fed beef has a much higher ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids than wild game or grass-fed beef. A high ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids has been linked with an increased risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, allergies, depression, obesity, and auto-immune disorders. (Simopoulos and Robinson, The Omega Diet, published by HarperCollins in 1999.) A ratio of four or lower is considered ideal. The ratio in grain-fed beef is more than 14 to 1. In grassfed beef, it is approximately two to one.”(2)

Even the skin on animals that are grass-fed and have the proper Omega 6 to Omega 3 don’t burn when cooking like grain-fed animals. It’s a beautiful golden skin that is full of AA!

If your worrying about cholesterol-don’t. The lie about cholesterol has been proven to be just that by Sally Fallon. In fact I’ll post soon and show you the numbers on my cholesterol after switching from grain-fed animals to grass-fed. It’s pretty cool stuff.
